It really is.

There is a story about a group of people who lived long ago who became deaf and did not know it. These people were known as the Children of Israel. God’s People. After God rescued them from the land of Eygpt, He gave them laws concerning their way of life. God’s words were written down on a scroll. This scroll was stored in the temple. This scroll was a treasure. It contained the Word of God.

As time went on, these Children of Israel began to slowly drift away from God. They began to skip their time of reading from the precious scroll. They followed their wicked king into idolatry, becoming more distant from God. Somewhere during this time a clumsy priest dropped this scroll and it rolled into some dark corner. It would seem like a search would have been made to find this precious document. However, these Children of Israel had walked so far away from God that they did not even notice that the scroll was missing.

In this scroll, God had told these Children of Israel that there would be many blessings when they follow Him and many curses should they stray. These Children of Israel were not reading this scroll. They forgot about the warnings. God tried to warn them. He sent prophets warning of doom. Yet, nothing changed. As these Children of Israel were wandering away from God, they were losing their ability to hear Him. They became deaf toward God. God says of these Children of Israel, “Who will listen to me? Their ears are closed so they cannot hear. The word of the Lord is offensive to them, they find no pleasure in it.” Jeremiah 6:10 NIV

In the time of King Josiah, the lost scroll was found. Josiah had a heart that wanted to follow after God. Josiah had ordered that the temple be repaired. As the reparations were being done, someone discovered the scroll. Much fear accompanied the reading of this Word of God. For in them, they read of all the curses that would befall them if they strayed from serving God. They prayed to God asking if these things were about to happen. God replied saying, “Yes. They will happen. But because your heart is after me, Josiah, this evil will not come until after you have died.”

When the Word of God disappears, we lose our hearing.
